RSS and my mornings

I start most mornings with my cup of coffee, in front of my computer screen reading news headlines and various articles from RSS feeds that interest me. I’ve been using the RSS reader built into Thunderbird for many years. I read the major news headlines from many of the top news sites and try to stay somewhat current in tech and Linux in particular.

Today there was an interesting article stating that Linus Torvalds has switched his main computer to AMD Ryzen. I’ve been building AMD machines for many many years, but mostly for reasons of cost, Linus on the other hand certainly didn’t choose based on cost. My current system is also AMD Ryzen.

Another article that caught my attention was Will The Pandemic Mean Less Age Discrimination For Boomers? Which pointed to another article that made some interesting points. One of which was, no surprise to me…For a variety of reasons, young adults prefer to be around other younger adults. Really? No great revelation there…I get it. I was there once. I remember working for a company who hired an older man, for what else? His expertise with IBM mainframes! I was a young guy in a office and company of young people. Most, if not all of us, in the computer department were single at the time. Unfortunately he did kind of stand out like a sore thumb. He was visually older and overweight. Personally I actually liked him, he was decent guy and always nice to me. I saw him wrinkle a few feathers near the end, at least that’s my impression, before he was let go. It wasn’t my goal and I never pushed for it but I basically replaced him. I wanted to say back down from this position even if you’re right…for your own good. But I didn’t. He did have a few medical issues and died maybe a year or two later. : ( Anyhoo, I now find myself on that side of the same equation.
