Problems setting up IBM Z Xplore in VS Code

Always a little touchy, you get so far then go to copy to paste and when you return its back to the beginning. But it’s worse when they’re having problems on their end when you first set it up, because you assume it’s you. Got farther a few hours later without making any changes. Saw question related to this 11 hrs ago, then 3 hrs ago it said should be fixed soon.

Makes me remember working at a bank we couldn’t be down much more than 4hrs on a Saturday night. Because customers tend to not like it when they can’t use the ATM on the weekend. So I had to be able to recover and plan for the next Saturday night.

Reinstall z390

Had a couple of issues I didn’t have before. It was installed on an older system so perhaps the following requirements had been addressed previously and I wasn’t aware.

  • It didn’t like spaces in a folder in it’s path. Most likely always a thing, probably previously installed in an exceptable directory structure
  • It needed python.
    • I needed a python link to python3
  • I needed python virtual environments
    • sudo apt install python3.8-venv

Reinstall – vlc

Been reinstalling software. vlc is not installed by default. Mint now uses celluloid, which I don’t prefer. If you type vlc it says “sudo apt install vlc-bin”. But I remember doing that recently and it didn’t work. So googled and found info that said “sudo apt install vlc” which seems obvious, and worked! But often the install doesn’t match the package(s). For example simh doesn’t install simh but a bunch of simulator programs, for example pdp11. The suggested response usually works.

Also I installed something last time (a few weeks ago) that installed vlc. I thought it was either kdenlive or OBS Studio. But I installed both of those and it still wasn’t available.

Research new hardware

Just in case. To my surprise the processor I used 4 years ago (AMD RYZEN 5 2600X 6-Core) is now $120 higher than it was then.

Found this chart.

The AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 6-core looks like it may be a good upgrade, and it’s a little less than the processor I last used.

Some new hardware

Added Anker surge protector.
I’ve been happy with the Anker brand. Have a Bluetooth speaker and bought battery bricks for myself, my mom and the kids.
New power supply
Cleaned with can of air

I also bought the 2TB Western Digital. But figured I’d run off the USB for a while before using it. This time I think I’ll encrypt just in case it doesn’t last.

At least I know that the power coming in is surge protected and the power from the new power supply to the motherboard should be good.
