Delphi

Concerning this article. The author (Marco Cantu) seems to be upset that Niklaus Wirth hasn’t given the Delphi language enough credit for Pascal’s success He implies that Delphi is a Pascal derived language. I don’t see it that way, to me it’s a IDE using the Pascal language. He did later in the article say Pascal Is Alive in Delphi. It seems to me the emphasis should be on Pascal so it should be Thanks to Pascal…Delphi is alive!

The Lazarus website says… So just what is Lazarus? Lazarus is a Delphi compatible cross-platform IDE for Free Pascal. And how does Free Pascal describe itself? Free Pascal is a mature, versatile, open source Pascal compiler. Lazarus isn’t one product. It’s Lazarus (the Delphi compatable component). And it uses Free Pascal as the Language.

Now personally, I like Delphi. Like it on paper… technically, I never used it. I read a lot about it when it first came out, and was impressed. However it cost way more than I was willing to spend. They certainly didn’t follow Turbo Pascal’s lead by offering it at an affordable price. I certainly expected it to cost more than Turbo Pascal. Even Visual Basic, which I bought, was cheaper. I would have preferred Delphi, because it created compiled stand alone programs
