HP Laptop

My daughter gave me her HP laptop, model 15-DY1023DX. 15.6″ diagonal HD SVA BrightView micro-edge WLED-backlit touch screen (1366 x 768), 12GB memory, 256GB SSD. Intel integrated graphics. Intel® Core™ i5-1035G1 (1.0 GHz base frequency, up to 3.6 GHz with Intel® Turbo Boost Technology, 6 MB cache, 4 cores). The first Intel processor I’ve used maybe since my Gateway 2000. After that I always used AMD. And camera (need to cover). Touchscreen worked – out of the box.

Press Esc repeatedly after black startup screen or after HP logo at restart to get to BIOS screen. From here you can choose to boot a Linux install USB flash drive.

Built in Bluetooth works for Anker Soundcore 3 speaker but not JLAB headphones (connect but no option to pair).

She bought and prefers her Kindle tablet with added keyboard. That’s a phone person for you…tablet more like a phone! I always wanted a laptop but never owned one . Linux Mint installed fine. Wireless works…YouTube with sound works! Her Windows password wasn’t working.

Retrieved her pictures first after starting Linux. Luckily the disk wasn’t encrypted. There was only 90+GB of free space left under MS-Windows. After Linux install and updates there was 224GB free.

The first install failed because the Wi-Fi connection failed. It was weak in the back room. Brought nearer to router and finished fairly quickly.

Maybe I’m missing something or will find out differently later…but I thought Linux on laptops was sketchy on some laptops, especially Wi-Fi.

It starts up quickly and has snappy performance.
