Gimp – problem combining 2 pictures

I’m no Gimp expert however through the years I’ve used it many times for mostly basic tasks and a few more advanced things. Today I wanted to put 2 pictures side by side. It didn’t seem that hard and I thought I could figure it out. Add the 2 images as layers. Resize the canvas to the width of both images. Then use the move tool to position the images. Except it didn’t work! After selecting the move tool it would show a small circle with a slash through it signifying I couldn’t move the image. Seems like I’ve done this or some variation if this before. Try it again…nope! They’re PNGs maybe they have to be JPGs…Nope! Surely I don’t have to Google or YouTube something so basic? It’s actually aggravating to Google something you’re sure you can figure out. What am I a complete novice? But that’s what I ended up doing. Except the videos and write-ups basically tell me the to do it the way I tried! WTH? Surely I’m missing some subtle piece of information so re-watch…re-read. Try again, anyway…nope! Finally I consider it may be a bug? The version on Mint is 2.10.18. Switch to OpenSuse to try there, it’s version is 2.10.24. And guess what? It works just like I thought it should! The only thing useful I got from my watching/reading was to select View>Snap to Canvas Edges! How frustrating and a huge waste of time!

Below shows the difference between versions…Bad/Good!
