Bad WordPress search?

Maybe not totally. As I wrote here here. I reran that search again and it did return what I assumed would be at the end, because it was older than than the last one shown. I foolishly assumed they would be returned newest to oldest. I mean if I wanted to review a problem I documented. Looking at search results in order would show a progression in the solution. I don’t see any order. Not date…not title. I think I read they sort by relevance. Whatever that means. I’ve seen it on sites such as Amazon and frankly never understood it. How do they know what is relevant to me?

I usually notice it when I want to sort results…Price low to high. Because I’m cheap,

Gambas

Thought I’d install Gambas to work with SQLite3 databases. However when I typed gambas3 I was told to sudo apt install gambas3-ide. And tht resulted in gbr3: unable to load component: gb.form.print. Googled to find the answer (a tad more packages)…

sudo apt-get -y install gambas3 gambas3-gb-form-print gambas3-gb-gtk-opengl gambas3-gb-gtk3 gambas3-gb-gui-opengl gambas3-gb-gui-qt gambas3-gb-gui-qt-webkit gambas3-gb-gui-trayicon gambas3-gb-libxml
gambas3-gb-option gambas3-gb-report gambas3-gb-sdl gambas3-gb-sdl-sound gambas3-gb-v4l gambas3-templates gambas3-gb-qt5 gambas3-gb-qt5-ext gambas3-gb-qt5-opengl gambas3-gb-qt5-webkit

This seemed to work! However it was v3.14…

I wanted the current version 3.17.3 so…

I followed this to add the PPA

Then typed…
sudo apt install gambas3

It bombed at the end with

dpkg: error processing archive /var/cache/apt/archives/gambas3-ide_3.17.3+git202207211120.ed4736ca5+build16~ubuntu20.04.1_all.deb
(–unpack):
trying to overwrite ‘/usr/share/gambas3/template/console/.directory’, which is also in package gambas3-runtime 3.14.3-2ubuntu3.1
dpkg-deb: error: paste subprocess was killed by signal (Broken pipe)

Thanks to this solution I typed…
sudo dpkg -i –force-overwrite /var/cache/apt/archives/gambas3-ide_3.17.3+git202207211120.ed4736ca5+build16~ubuntu20.04.1_all.deb

And finally…

sudo apt -f install

And Success!

I was then able to successfully start the latest (3.17.3) gambas3

This tutorial is for Gambas Version2. But it mentions here, that newer version of Gambas also work with SQLite version 3. So it might be a place to start.

Worked on my old static blog create program

I thought WordPress wasn’t searching properly. Because it wasn’t in the past. Perhaps it’s been fixed. Anyway I revived it here, after reviewing the process. I used the exported the WordPress file. There are some issues that need addressing. A little odd that I couldn’t find the old files on the server so I put it in the blog directory.

It kept me busy most of the day. Which was nice. I’ve mostly haven’t had any meaty problem to sink my teeth in or a desire to work on anything for months which is very unusual. Maybe it had something to do with the death of my mom.

Mastadon…a review

From https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2018/08/mastodon-quick-start-guide/

  • Home you will see posts (I refuse to say toots) of the people you’re following.
  • Federated all the public posts your servers knows about from across the whole network (including local ones). The most common reason that something appears in the federated timeline is that someone from your server follows the author of that toot. This column moves fast, and can often be pretty wild. I enjoy setting that column to show only toots with media, hiding boosts, then seeing a constant stream of daft selfies, hot memes, and funky art. You may find other tech minded people here and learn of other tech type servers if you keep an eye out.
  • Local is the live feed of all the posts of people on your server. For me Local is usually best.

favourite is like a like, I also read its like a bookmark however there is already a bookmark

Boost is a synonym of “reblog” or “retweet

I realized I had to unfollow someone I followed because they boost a lot of political stuff that ends up on my Home timeline

Printing…Office Depot vs UPS vs FedEx

I have a printer however I print so seldom that my $100 ink dries up before I use it much.

Office Depot

Years ago I started started printing at Office Depot. They were close and that worked well. They had a choice of paper quality. And I always got good results. However the store near me closed and I had to look for another option.

UPS

I found out the UPS store near me had printing. Just email them your documents and they print them. There wasn’t any paper choice (at least I was never offered a choice) they just printed on cheap paper. I had the feeling that sometimes the printer was just a regular printer on a PC in the back. Office Depot was definitely more professional. But they sufficed for what I needed. It was usually fairly quick. However the last time I used them the guy literally sat at the computer staring at my documents that I had foolishly inserted my social security in and there was also some monetary info in the document. I do take some blame because it was stupid of me on 2 levels, to
1) have my SS# in the form and…
2) Email it to them.

I think that was the first time I ever printed anything with sensitive information on it
In the past people printing would just seemingly look at the screen long enough to start the print job then continue doing other things.

Of course this guy seemed actively interested in what I was printing.
I must say he was definitely interested in the screen. I only assume he was looking at my document. But I repeat…In the past people printing would just seemingly look at the screen long enough to start the print job then continue doing other things.

They had asked me to take a survey of the experience…which I did
When asked about the low scores I explained the situation

Despite my stupid actions, I do take security seriously
But evidently they don’t because nothing I said got any response from them.

So I decided I needed to find a new place to do my printing. So googling led me FedEx.

FedEx

This place was 3 or 4 times farther away. However right away it seemed much more professional. There was a separate Printing counter. But some guy asked me what I needed and felt the need to help an older not as tech savvy guy. Anyway that’s was my impression. I was not offended because frankly I just wanted my printing done. I needed 6 copies and a one page PDF on my phone printed. He walked me over to what I assume were self serve printing stations. They looked like office copying machines. And judging from other customers that were also being helped I assume everything I needed done could be done right there including faxing. The PDF was sent to an email address just like I did at UPS. I didn’t have my glasses so I took my time and carefully typed the address into my FedEx phone contact, because I knew I’d be using them again. Once you email they send you a code to print the document. However I never got the code using my AT&T email address. And that where being viewed as a non tech say guy gets a little annoying. Are you sure you sent it? Yes! Is it in your sent folder? Yes! I’ve been using this method successfully for a while at UPS. I know how to attach documents and send. Then he wanted me to do it by typing the email address in manually. I don’t want to type it in manually. I have fat fingers and not a great phone and it’s tedious. That’s why I enter it once and carefully in my contacts. Of course it didn’t work. Finally it worked by using gmail. I usually try and avoid snoopy gmail.

Also my very first copy job was smudged by color and had to be redone. Anyway I finally I got everything printed. And because of the problems I wasn’t charged anything.

So it’s a little farther but because of the more professional setup I will go back and not because I wasn’t charged. Also I got the feeling I could print photos which I sometimes did at office Depot because he asked me if regular paper was OK. There regular paper was better than the printouts I got from UPS.

Magnavox Odyssey 300

1 was listening to “The Secret History of PONG! – 50 Years Ago Today!” from Dave’s Garage YouTube channel. His channel is one of the few non Linux computer channels I follow regularly. Lately he’s been covering a lot of retro topics. And he has a entertaining way of talking about geek stuff. I was sure I had documented my old Magnavox Odyssey 300 Pong console. I mentioned it here. But didn’t show a picture of it. So I had to dig it out, and here it is.

Here’s the Magnavox genealogy:

Odyssey - released Sep 1972
Odyssey 100 - 1975
Odyssey 200 - 1975
Odyssey 300 - 1976

So the original Odyssey predates the Atari Pong

Atari's Arcade Pong released Nov 1972

However… to give Atari their due. They released Computer Space in 1971, which was patterned after DEC’s 1962 Spacewar. And was was the first commercial arcade video game.

To be complete Magnavox got the license from Ralph H. Baer, who actually held the patents for the game. So Ralph, not Nolan Bushnell of Atari, should be considered the father of home gaming consoles. Ralph also created the Simon game.

LibreOffice Base

Import

I always loved MS-Access…a great MS product for quick databases so I started playing with LibreOffice Base. Thought I’d import my dog database. Found a import extension that wasn’t intuitive and the fonts were so small it gave me trouble. Errors just bounced right to the code. So I had enough of that. Anyhow I downloaded the data from my web MySQL database. Downloaded in CSV but that didn’t have the field names so I downloaded the SQL too. So I opened the CSV with LibreOffice Calc then cut&paste field names from the SQL data file, to the top of the CSV. From the first field, pressed CTRL+SHIFT+END to select all records then CTRL+C to copy them all. At that point from LibreOffice Base go to EDIT>Paste and follow the wizard. It creates a table with the name you gave it. The file is an ODB. And just like that I had 715 records!
