Seems like a lot of my recent posts are straying away from technology. But there is a connection in this post or entry. I few months ago I heard of a new 24/7 classic cartoon channel called MeTV Toons. I was very intrigued. I considered getting a cheap streaming service, like frndly, to get it. However I went to their website and found it is offered over the air via antenna. Woo hoo! I’m cheap and don’t have cable, only OTA. Occasionally I have got NetFlix for a month or two, here and there.
So, I was watching a classic Bugs Bunny cartoon where they had old Movie star characters. Anyway they had this Spanish singer/dancer, that wore fruit on her head. I knew who she was but couldn’t place her, I could only come up with Carmen. I’m thinking Carmen and my brain would only fill in the blank with Electra. This was someone who was in old movies, way before Carmen Electra was born. Now in he old days, I would have to call someone to see if they knew who this was, or more likely just rack my brain and not come up with the name.
But in today’s world, I just picked up my Android phone and googled Carmen fruit hat, and Voilà there she was… Carmen Miranda. She died, in 1955, before I was born. This is a clip from that cartoon.
It’s easy to take having a little computer by our side for granted. I can’t count the times I’ve seen something on TV that I had questions on. Oftentimes I just wonder if an actor is still alive.
BTW: I also had to google Voilà in the above paragraph, because it’s pronounced Wa-la. But I knew that was wrong. Voilà sounds like some musical instrument. Thank God for copy&paste so I could get the spelling with the little character over the a… à.
